ENERGY EFFICIENCY GRANTS IN IRELAND: WHAT HOMEOWNERS NEED TO KNOW
17th January 2025

As energy prices continue to rise and sustainability becomes a priority, energy efficiency is more important than ever for Irish households. The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) provides a range of grants to help homeowners upgrade their homes, reduce energy costs, and lower their carbon footprint. From insulation to solar panels and heat pumps, these grants make eco-friendly living more accessible and affordable. Here’s your complete guide.
Why Invest in Energy Efficiency?
Upgrading your home’s energy efficiency offers several key benefits:
- Save Money: Reduced energy consumption leads to significant savings on utility bills.
- Enhanced Comfort: Insulation and efficient heating systems ensure a warm, cosy home all year round.
- Eco-Friendly Living: Cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to Ireland’s sustainability goals.
- Boost Property Value: Energy-efficient homes are more attractive to buyers and typically command higher prices.
SEAI GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR HOMEOWNERS
1. Insulation Grants are available for homes built before 2011, work must be completed by SEAI-registered contractors.
Attic Insulation: €400–€1,500 depending on the property type (e.g., detached, semi-detached, or apartment).
Cavity Wall Insulation: €400–€1,700.
Internal Wall Insulation (Dry-Lining): €2,400–€4,500.
External Wall Insulation: €3,000–€6,000 (depending on property type).
2. Solar Energy Grants – for homes built before 2021, BER must improve after installation, with a minimum requirement of a C3 energy rating.
Funding up to €2,400 for solar photovoltaic (PV) installation.
Covers systems generating up to 2kWp (kilowatt-peak), with an additional €300 per kWp up to a maximum of 4kWp.
3. Heat Pump Grants – Up to €6,500 for installing energy-efficient heat pump systems. Homes must be built before 2011, property must be well-insulated (attic and wall insulation are prerequisites), technical assessment is required to ensure suitability.
Air-to-Water Heat Pump: €6,500.
Ground Source Heat Pump: €6,500.
Exhaust Air Heat Pump: €6,500.
Air-to-Air Heat Pump: €3,500.
4. Heating Control Upgrades – Up to €700 for homes built before 2011, the upgrades must improve energy efficiency and are awarded for modern heating control systems, like programmable thermostats or zoned heating systems. Work must be carried out by SEAI-registered contractors.
5. Deep Retrofit Scheme is designed for homeowners looking to undertake multiple energy upgrades to significantly improve their home’s energy efficiency. This grant supports comprehensive projects that include insulation (walls, attics and floors), heat pumps, solar PV systems, and modern heating controls. By addressing multiple areas, the grant helps homes achieve higher Building Energy Ratings (BER) and lower energy bills.
While funding varies based on the project scope, it covers a substantial portion of costs for homes requiring extensive improvements. To qualify, homeowners must undergo a post-retrofit BER assessment and ensure all work is carried out by SEAI-approved contractors. This grant is ideal for those seeking a complete transformation of their home’s energy performance.
6. Warmer Homes Scheme provides fully-funded energy efficiency upgrades for eligible low-income households in Ireland. This initiative aims to improve home comfort, reduce energy bills, and lower carbon emissions. The scheme covers upgrades such as attic and cavity wall insulation, draught-proofing, lagging jackets for water tanks, energy-efficient lightbulbs, and heating system improvements.
To qualify, applicants must own their home and be in receipt of certain social welfare payments, such as the Fuel Allowance or Working Family Payment. The scheme ensures that vulnerable households can benefit from warmer, more energy-efficient homes at no cost. For more information, visit the SEAI website.
7. The EV Home Charger Grant provides up to €600 towards the purchase and installation of a home charging point for electric vehicle owners in Ireland. This grant is designed to make EV ownership more convenient and sustainable by enabling efficient at-home charging. To qualify, applicants must own or lease an eligible electric vehicle and ensure the installation is carried out by an SEAI-registered contractor. The grant covers both the cost of the charger and the professional installation, helping to reduce the upfront expenses of transitioning to cleaner transport. For more details, visit the SEAI website.
SEAI grants provide Irish homeowners with a practical and impactful way to enhance energy efficiency, reduce costs, and contribute to a greener future. By improving home comfort, cutting energy bills, and increasing property value, these grants make sustainable living more accessible and financially rewarding. They also support Ireland’s national climate goals by encouraging eco-friendly upgrades that lower carbon emissions.
