We are all stocked up on Big Tom Tomato Food in store! 🍅
Earlier this week we talked about how you can start growing your tomatoes, but it’s also important they are kept feed so you have a good tomato crop - that's where Big Tom comes in!
Our Big Tom Tomato Food is full of essential nutrients which are made more effective due to the wetting agent, which helps tomatoes take in maximum nutrients for tastier tomatoes all round.
When you spot tiny green tomatoes in your greenhouse – this is when you should start feeding your tomato plant.
After the initial feed, the plants should then be fed at least once a week in the greenhouse by mixing 20ml (1/2 capful) of the tomato feed with 4.5 litres of water. and pouring it onto the base of the plant until the soil is saturated.

🍅 Grow your own Tomatoes 🍅
There’s nothing better than juicy ripe home-grown tomatoes straight from the garden! With help from our garden expert Geraldine, we have put together our top tips for growing your own tomatoes, you whether you are sowing seeds or growing plants!
🌱 Sowing Tomato Seeds:
Ideally, the best time to sow tomato seeds is mid-March when the risk of frost has passed.
Sow your seeds in 3 inch pots with a Multi-Purpose compost like The Gardener’s Multi-Purpose Compost - we have a range of deals on our compost in store at the moment!
You should start with your seeds indoors or in a greenhouse, your seeds should begin to germinate within a few weeks.
🍅 Growing Tomato Plants:
If you have bought tomato plants, or when the seedlings are strong enough, they will need to be planted into larger pots or in tomato planters.
We recommend growing your tomato plants in a tomato grow bag like our Gro-Sure Tomato Planter. By doing this you ensure that your tomatoes get the best start as the soil conditions and nutrients are specifically for growing tomatoes.
Before you begin planting, you should cut some holes in the bottom of the bag for adequate drainage.
Once you have the drainage sorted, you can then start cutting holes in the bag for your tomato plants, creating a good-sized hole for your plant in the soil, then place the plant in and cover back over, patting the soil down in place.
Remember to keep your tomato plants supported with a cane and leave it in an area that gets plenty of sun exposure while being protected from the wind.
⭐ Geraldine's Top Tip:
When the plant is about 2 metres tall, pinch out the top of the plant. This will help the plant to focus on growing more tomatoes rather than having the plant continuing to growing.
Any questions or if you have any #growyourown requests, let us know below and we will get back to you! Happy growing
